Take Five with WGUC Evening Host Megan Lavilla

A CCM grad, Megan grew up in the Dayton suburb of Beavercreek and she began playing flute in fourth grade. She joined our WGUC team a few months ago, and today she answers a few of your questions.

Carol asks, “How do you prepare for your on-air shifts?”

I usually look up pronunciations just to double check that I’m saying a name the correct way, but besides that, I listen to the music that I’m going to be playing to get a feel for the piece. It gets me excited for my shift to start!

Laura asks, “What do you want listeners to know about what you and what you do at WGUC?”

I want listeners to know that I genuinely look forward to being on air every day, and I love that I get to accompany them as they go about their own days. I’ve always loved classical and instrumental music so so much, and it’s a constant companion in my life. I hope that I can convey my excitement for the music through the radio, and that they also look forward to the music because of me!

Debbie asks, “Are you from Cincinnati, if not, what brought you to Cincinnati and what would you tell people about Cincinnati?”

I am actually from Dayton, Ohio! Going to school at the College Conservatory of Music here at the University of Cincinnati is what brought me to Cincinnati, but the culture is truly what caused me to stay. I’d mainly emphasize this to people, as I think it is so important and neat! Around every corner is a new restaurant, small business, or art, or something that makes this city so colorful. My dad is Filipino, and I grew up with a large interest in international culture. Here in Cincinnati, every ethnicity has a new place popping up that I can experience the food and share the culture. I love the diversity and supporting the community is truly so easy when our city is big enough to support everyone from all walks of life, but small enough that every interaction is personable and meaningful.

Corey asks, “Is there a particular piece of music you love to see appear on your playlist?”

Definitely!! I had an enthusiastic moment the other day when our 6 O’Clock Symphony was Dvorak’s New World Symphony! Puccini’s Nessun Dorma from Turandot is another one I get so excited over, but I also love seeing any arrangement of Mozart’s Magic Flute, as it’s my favorite opera. Besides that, I love when film and video game soundtracks make their way onto the playlists, they’re usually so beautiful but underappreciated at times!!

Robert asks, “What other type of music do you listen to (or perform)?

Performance-wise, I usually just stick to classical music, or classical contemporary, if we’re talking about the flute. Chaminade’s Concertino has to be my all-time favorite flute piece, and my favorite contemporary composer is Ian Clarke; his flute pieces are all so whimsical. As for listening, I listen to all genres! I grew up on Josh Groban and Enya, but I’ve been listening to more indie pop and kpop recently, with artists like Stray Kids, Cody Fry, BTS and Blanco White. So again, a large variety!
