Why does a public radio station do educational outreach in its community? We asked Kahvah Whittaker, our Program Coordinator for WGUC’s Classics for Kids and WVXU’s Democracy & Me.
Want to help support further outreach efforts from Cincinnati Public Radio?
Kahvah holds a master’s degree in social work with a concentration in leadership and social change. She joined Cincinnati Public Radio in August 2022 and has built meaningful connections with local schools, universities, and organizations. She spearheads our MLK Jr. Day speech competition in several schools, our Classics for Kids event in Washington Park for Make Music Day, an ongoing partnership with two different Girl Scout councils and more. Here are her thoughts on Cincinnati Public Radio’s outreach efforts.
Sharing AND Listening
“Cincinnati Public Radio carries out these outreach programs because we want to be a valuable resource to our community, above and beyond the great music and important news and information we provide. We are in a unique position to be facilitators, collaborators, or experts, depending on what’s needed. And any expertise we have is only enhanced by the interactions we have with the young people using these programs and our interns who give us guidance on what’s important. We never want to dictate our beliefs; we want to share and listen through both programs.”
Promoting Positive Outlets
“I hope to see these programs grow and involve more and more children and teens. A lot of kids today don’t have a third space, outside of home and school, to be kids, to follow an interest or learn to be a better, more engaged citizen. Even to socialize. With our many collaborators, we hope to provide that kind of positive outlet.”
Supporting The Next Generation
“Because of listener support, Cincinnati Public Radio can reach out to the next generation of voters, community leaders and classical music lovers. Your contributions, especially during our fund drives, are so important.
