Cincinnati Public Radio’s new home will be officially known as the Scripps Family Center for Public Media, thanks to the generous support of renowned philanthropist, Marilyn Scripps.
The eco-friendly new building on Dana Avenue in Evanston is unique (it’s constructed with Canadian mass timber instead of steel beams) and will give WGUC-FM and WVXU-FM 11 studios in which to present timeless classical music and pursue the award-winning journalism that have been local mainstays for decades.
Ms. Scripps, a local entrepreneur and benefactor, is a member of the business family that pioneered broadcast journalism in Cincinnati nearly a century ago with the area’s first radio and television stations. Her love of the region and her belief in the critical importance of community-enhancing journalism intersect in the new Scripps Family Center for Public Media.
“My family has been synonymous with quality journalism in this area since we launched The Cincinnati Post in 1881,” said Ms. Scripps, “so I was eager to support a new and dynamic home for our great public radio stations. Seeing that beautiful new building and thinking of all the ways this community will benefit from the work that will go on there, it was an easy decision to add my support.”
The new facility has nearly twice the number of studios as the space it has been renting since 1980 near Music Hall.
“Cincinnati Public Radio is grateful to Marilyn Scripps for her belief in what we do. Like Marilyn, we believe in the strength of engaged citizenship in a democracy,” said Richard Eiswerth, President/CEO of Cincinnati Public Radio, “and the Scripps Family Center for Public Media will be a powerful tool in providing objective knowledge to our people.”
The new Scripps Family Center for Public Media, 2117 Dana Avenue in Evanston, will host a welcome weekend on Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27, that will include a tour of the new facility, performances, talks, a game show, food trucks and more. Details can be found at Welcome Weekend.
