Experience

Don joined WGUC in January 1997. After graduating from Youngstown State University, he spent ten years in Radio Frequency (RF) and broadcast engineering. This has prepared him well for the challenges he has faced while working at CPR.

In 2002 WGUC was the first public radio station in the state of Ohio to broadcast in HD Radio. It was also the first classical station in the country to broadcast in surround sound using Neural surround technology. Another first in classical music was the development of a hard drive system in 2001 capable of storing all the classical music played on WGUC.

CPR expanded in 2005 with the purchase of WVXU and later the addition of WMUB. The new stations required infrastructure improvements and expanded studio space to allow full integration of all three stations.

After the purchase of WVXU, Don led the project to combine the WGUC and WVXU transmitters into one antenna, thus saving CPR about $1.5 million over the past 17 years in tower rental. He is responsible for successfully receiving numerous local, state, and federal grants, which allowed CPR to improve the quality of audio and reliability of its technical facility. Don is the driving force to consistently upgrade the CPR state-of-the-art broadcast facility.

As CPR embarks on building a new broadcast facility, Don and his team are responsible for designing and specifying all the technical systems. This facility will, for the first time ever, provide CPR with a home of its own where we can continue the tradition of excellence for decades to come.

Education

Don received his BS in Engineering from Youngstown State University. As a student, he started working at WYSU as a recording engineer and soon after became a student broadcast engineer. This is where he developed a commitment and love for public radio.
